CHARACTER
Character Name: Ellie Williams
Character Age: 14
Canon: The Last of Us
Canon Point: After drowning, just before reaching the fireflies.
History: Wiki link.
Personality:
First and foremost, Ellie is a survivor. She's grown up in a harsh reality with a constant threat of death, especially over the past nine months or so. She isn't afraid to kill somebody (infected or human) when she sees they're a threat to her and/or people she cares about. She knows she's important for the creation of a cure for the cordyceps infection, and is incredibly determined to try and make it to the fireflies so that cure can become a reality. There's little time for morality or wondering whether she was right or wrong when it comes to the lives she's taken for her survival and for the survival of those she cares about.
Despite all these threats and killing, Ellie never feels sorry for herself or asks "why me"; she still manages to keep pretty upbeat and positive most of the time. She can find hope in things even when the world seems most dark. She does believe that one day things will improve for her and for humanity as a whole. She knows there's good in the world, as much as there is a lot of bad stuff too. Really, Ellie's a kid, and likes acting her age. She's fourteen; she loves puns, horses, dinosaurs, video games (even she's never actually played one), comic books, music, and having fun with people her own age. And she very rarely lets the horrific things going around her from being herself during times when she's not fighting for the lives of herself and her friends.
As she's spent most of the first fourteen years of her life in a Military boarding school inside a quarantine zone, Ellie is an immensely curious girl. She knows little of what life was like before the infection took hold of the world twenty years before, and often asks questions about how life was back then. She can also sometimes be a little naive in certain areas, certainly more so than Joel. She'd have fallen into a hunter's trap if Joel hadn't seen it, for one. Though this sort of thing does become less common as the game goes on; she's been learning from Joel and seeing what people are capable of.
As a result of such things, Ellie does have some trust issues now. This is sort of necessary where she's from. People are trying to kill her and Joel, the one person still alive that she trusts and cares for, on a daily basis. The most obvious example of her distrust here would be David, who she didn't trust from the get go, but did form a short lived alliance with for the chance of some medicine to help Joel. Once David reveals he's with the bandits that hurt Joel, she's immediately aggressive toward him, and ultimately kills him mercilessly.
When she does care for and trust someone, she is incredibly thoughtful toward them. She takes their feelings into account and does her best to make them happy. For example, she'll often take things with the express purpose of giving it to someone she cares about - such as when she took the toy robot for her friend Sam after Sam's brother forbid him from taking it himself, or when she took the photo of Joel with his daughter to give to Joel. When she lets someone into her heart, she is an incredibly loyal, thoughtful and caring friend toward them. It may take time, certainly now the more Ellie's learnt about the world, but once you're friends with Ellie, you're friends for life.
Ellie can be pretty rash at times, making bold and sometimes dangerous choices. Most of the time, this is a result of her quick thinking and sheer determination to keep herself and others (Joel, namely) safe. It can also be from pure fear. Her biggest fear is ending up alone, after being left alone through death or abandonment by so many people, and Ellie is at her most rash and even childish when threatened by this. When it appears that Joel might leave her too, she straight up steals a horse and runs away - probably her most childish and irresponsible act the entire game. This also shows that she can be irrational and frustrated when the people she trusts let her down. A similar thing happened when her best friend and first crush, Riley, lets her down by briefly abandoning her. Ellie is fairly cold toward her, and acts out a little.
This is a girl who more often than not is not afraid to tell people how she feels. She's definitely not shy. If she thinks someone is doing or saying something that she disagrees with, she'll say so. She's loud, she swears, and will probably resort to violence in more serious cases. Her words can sometimes be her only defence against others though, and she'll insult any enemies left, right and centre when she can.
Buried beneath the loud-mouth on the surface though is a very loyal, enduring, funny, irrational teenage girl who's trying to help humanity against all odds.
Inventory:
The clothes on her back, with her switchblade in her jeans pocket. Also a backpack containing:
+ A pistol
+ Her mom's note to her
+ Riley's Firefly pendant
+ Sam's toy robot
+ No Pun Intended by Will Livingston (joke book)
+ No Pun Intended Volume Too by Will Livingston (joke book)
+ To Get to the Other Side by Kathryn McCormack (joke book)
+ A broken Walkman Cassette
Abilities: Ellie has no supernatural powers. Though she is immune to the cordyceps brain infection that turns people into aggressive mutated creatures. This isn't really a power, but it does make her different from everyone else in her world. Since she has been bit and technically been infected, it also means she does have strange growths on her brain, though they're benign and don't seem to affect her at all.
As for certain human skills and abilities, Ellie has quite a few. Living and travelling in a post apocalyptic world, she's knows a few things about survival. She knows basic first aid; she can sew up a man that'd just been impaled through his middle. She knows how to cook wildlife with few utensils. Beyond that, she can use a pistol, riffle, shotgun, bow and arrow, pipe bomb and molotov effectively. She's also very good at killing someone with her switch blade. Ellie is a good horse rider, and despite her age she can drive a car without crashing it.
Flaws: Yeah, Ellie has... killed a butt load of people. Often in pretty brutal ways. It's a choice between her (and Joel, and Riley) and them, and it's never a hard choice for her. She doesn't really feel remorse for the deaths, because they were trying to kill her and in the end it'll be worth it. Besides murder, her other crimes include running off and putting herself and others in danger (she did this at her old school and at Tommy's), lashing out when pissed, once or twice pushing matters she knows she shouldn't, and a lot of cursing.
